governor romney and his economic proposals? well, not so much anymore. said bennett to the budget committee chairman tells the new york times there is renewed interest in one of the governor's proposals at least, and that is capping income tax reductions and a flat $17,000. when governor romney suggested that back in october the president ridiculed it as a sketchy deal. not so sketchy anymore. are the india of, well, taking a look at the tax expenditures and adjusting a few write offs and deductions. russian state media, apparently the source to turn to these days reporting president obama will be visiting russia after being invited by russian president vladimir kitchen. reportedly extended the invitation during a call to congratulate the president on his reelection. the date is not been agreed to. the white house has not confirmed the trip, so until then we are hitting the president's travel itinerary from the kremlin. up next to my general patraeus agrees to testify before congress behind closed doors. he spends a lot of time behind closed doors. igniting speculation he would contradict t

that governor romney is spending some time with his family. and my hope is, before the end of the year, though, that we have a chance to-- to sit down and talk. you know, there-- there are certain aspects of governor romney's record and his ideas that i think could be very helpful. and, well, to give you one example, i do think he did a terrific job running the olympics. >> reporter: no word on when such a meeting could take place. >> ifill: in case you missed it, you can watch the complete news conference on our web site. coming up, more from the president's first post-election news conference on the investigation into the generals' scandal and his second-term agenda. plus, israeli air strikes in gaza and one family's battle with meningitis. but first, with the other news of the day, here's hari sreenivasan. >> sreenivasan: the president's challenge to republicans today on taxes sets up a new confrontation in congress. even before the white house news conference, senate minority leader mitch mcconnell warned again that raising rates on high-income earners will have almost no effect on the def

to speaking with governor romney, sitting down in the coming weeks to discuss ways you could work together on this nation's problems have you extended that invitation? has he accepted? and what ways do you think you can work together? >> we haven't scheduled something yet. i think everybody forgets the election was only a week ago. i know i've forgotten, i forgot on wednesday. i think everybody needs to catch their breath. i'm sure that governor romney is spending time with his family. and my hope is before the end of the year, though, we have a chance to sit down and talk. there are certain aspects of governor romney's record and his ideas that i think could be very helpful. to give you one example, i think he did a terrific job running the olympics. and that skill set of trying to figure out how do we make something work better applies to the federal government. there are a lot of ideas that i don't think are partisan ideas but are just smart ideas about how can we make the federal government more customer friendly, how can we make sure that we're consolidating programs that are duplicat
would like to believe that governor romney once he reviews those remarks, will have regret having said them. he doesn't want to become vice president of excuses. but until and unless republicans get in touch with the fact-based world, in particular with science, global warming comes to mind, evolution comes to mind, until they get in touch with this, it's very hard to see how your optimism and my hopes are going to be fulfilled. but hope springs eternal, and with mitch mcconnell, who i think is the key for the republicans, their leader in the senate, that, you know, he was ungracious in the first hours after the election results were known. he has been the lead preacher of the gospel of obstructionism. and if he continues to that, not only will the republican party, i think, find the capital dome sort of, they'll be in a temple of doom if they continue to do this. you just can't do it. with the election itself, this election is going to be studied for a very long time. this is now the 21st century and what president obama did, he hired math wizards and so called stat geeks, and they de

election. there has been mostly complimentary talk about governor romney saying he was a good man. he also had a good plan but there has been talk about he never really connected fully with the american people. to that point, governor jindal was asked about a comment romney made on a conference call yesterday with donors. he said he lost because president obama offered, quote gifts to young people and minorities. jindal rejected that and alluded to romney's damaging 47% comment, saying the gop had to fight for 100% of the vote. >> let's show we're the party not of big banks, wall street, of bailouts, not big business. we're the party that stands for families and small businessings, those simply working hard to pay their bills so their kids can get even better jobs. >> reporter: there's also been a lot of talk about the hispanic vote. of course president obama got 71%. mitt romney just 27%. compare that to the 44% that president bush got in 2004. you can see the party has its demographics problem. they're talking about softening their stance on immigration. possibly talking about, comprehen
and not the reason governor romney lost. what's the reaction been like in washington? >> republicans are very disappointed by this, and there are three big reasons. first of all, this is sour grapes, like this certainly isn't gracious. second, it's just not accurate. there were many, many other factors that were involved, gifts to minorities were not the reason that president obama won the white state of new hampshire, the largely white state of iowa. it's not why he won the hometown of paul ryan, janesville, wisconsin. so there's just a factual issue. but third and biggest, and this is where you heard the louisiana governor, bobby jindal, installed yesterday as the chairman of the republican governors association. this is where you heard him coming in, that republicans say this is a just-doesn't-get-it moment for romney. it makes republicans think that the 47% comment was no slip of the tongue. at his press conference in las vegas yesterday, governor jindal, our reporter, says became visibly agitated about this and said these comments were absolutely wrong. and they come at a time when almos

that maybe the gop brand was suffering and had been hurt. why is it that republicans are elected governor, but mitt romney could not win the presidency? >> i think mitt is a good and decent man. we talked a lot about that here yesterday. 30 republican governor, the most we had in a dozen years. most of the battle ground states have republican governors in them leading the way, turning things around, balancing budgets, doing it while lowering tax, seeing revenues go up by improving the economy in each state. i think the reason is we laid out a clear path, clear agenda. people gravitated toward that. and unfortunately, mitt romney's campaign in the end was not able to overcome the early attacks from the obama campaign back in june and they suffered the inability to clearly lay that out. republican governors as a contrast have been able to offer a clear plan for each of our states. we're going to change america one state at a time. we're optimistic about the future with great leadership here. >> gretchen: thanks for getting >> thank you. >> gretchen: your e-mails on oak trees and allergies a
